The Curious Savage is a touching comedy set in America in the 1950s. It is the story of Mrs Savage, a kind hearted, weathly widow who has spent her nether years living out all the foolish dreams she could never pursue while her husband was alive. Having experienced this freedom herself, she intends to set up a fund in memory of her husband to enable others to do the same. In her own words, 'There are plenty of charities for foolish people in desperate need, but none for people with a desperate need to be foolish.' Her stepsons and stepdaughter, appalled by this 'waste' of what they see as their rightful inheritance, have her committed in an attempt to gain control. Although she dreads the 'sanatorium', Mrs Savage comes to love the place and the characters who live there, while the control the children seek to take is twitched ever further from their grasp by Mrs Savage's cunning, aided by the other inmates.
